Now that I am no longer the watchdog for accuracy of data in nuclear security at the nuclear watchdog organization that helped me pay my rent for the last ten years, I continue to contribute to the educational programme of Toastmasters at the United Nations Head Quarters in Vienna.
Twice a month when the VIC Toastmasters Club meets at the Vienna International Centre, I am often attending. Most of the attendees are staff members of the United Nations Family of Organizations. It is an ideal opportunity for learning by doing. It’s a chance to practice communication and leadership skills. It’s a way of networking.
Part of the Toastmasters meeting is spontaneous speaking – Tabletopics. No warning. Answer a question from the Table Topics Master. Funny thing. I have not been signing up (volunteering) for roles to fill during the meetings for many years since I have been involved in the executive committee of the club. Since July 2019 I am no longer the “Area Director”. I am not even the “Immediate Past President” of the club. I am “just” a retiree.
So when the current president of the club, who was filling the role of Table Topics Master, called upon me to comment on the autumn of my life, this is what I said:
